Assisi: Assisi is a hill town located 27 kilometres east of Perugia. The town is famous for being the birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi — the man who began the Franciscan order. Pilgrims flock to this important religious town: many go to walk up to the Basilica di San Francesco to pay their respects to St Francis, and to marvel at the Giotto frescoes that depict his life.
Marmore Waterfalls: Italy is better known for beauty created by man — but the natural beauty of the Marmore Waterfalls can match the Sistine Chapel anytime. Just over an hour’s drive from Perugia, these dramatic falls are amongst the tallest in Europe. As they are now part of a hydroelectric plant, they can only be viewed during certain times of the day.
Todi: Step away from the tourist track and go for a day out in Todi — only a 40-minute drive south of Perugia. This sandy-coloured hillside town is more traditional, relaxed and quieter than its more visitor-filled neighbours. Walk through the steep, narrow streets and discover the frescoes at the Tempio di San Fortunato, people watch at the Piazza del Popolo and enjoy some local food at one of the many restaurants.
